LEFKANDI-XEROPOLIS 2004 SEASON Region II
In Region II, four trial trenches
were placed here on a North/South axis in two adjacent pairs separated
by some 10 m: one pair is located quite well down the rather gentle slope
of the hillside, the other more towards its roughly flatter top. Interestingly,
they offer different and apparently contradictory stories. One of the
higher pair, under slightly deeper than usual topsoil, yielded part of
a regular Late Helladic IIIC house. The lower pair produced some 1.75
m of 'topsoil' before reaching stone dumps, soil spreads of Early Iron
Age date with some interesting Late Helladic IIIC ceramics and figurines.
This curious juxtaposition means that within 10 m a drop of at least 2.50–3.0
m exists – with Mycenaean placed far higher up to the south. This
could only come about if there were somewhere a considerable piece of
terracing. Work was stopped at this juncture but it is in Region II that
our 2006 investigation will be focused on.
